Utilities contractor in full flow with TAAP’s tablet software applications
TAAP’s mobile technology for tablet devices, including windows mobile devices and iPads, has been rolled-out most recently to a large construction contractor, working on behalf of its utility clients.
The company employs over 1,300 permanent staff, and has established itself as one of the UK’s top service providers to the utility construction and civil engineering sectors.
Software applications provided by TAAP, which run on tablets, mobile PDAs, and secure web portals, enable job creation and allocation, as well as real-time reporting. The tablet devices provide enhanced visibility for mapping, diagrams, and images, and because the TAAP software allows freehand drawing to be done directly onto the screen of a device using a stylus, visual data can be augmented by marking up graphics.
Once these are marked-up (using freehand line drawing or pre-defined spot markers), the image is saved as part of the form – in the case of this particular client this may be a land survey, a report, or a health and safety check. For other clients, these features can be used on any type of graphic such as a photograph, a diagram of a piece of equipment or a vehicle (often used for damage management), or a street map showing the location of a property for example.
Many of the mappings the client is currently working on, relate to the new legislation that was brought in recently about transferring the ownership of most private sewers, lateral drains and pumping stations that form part of the sewer or lateral drain that connect to the public sewer network to the ownership of the regulated sewerage companies in England and Wales. http://www.ofwat.gov.uk/consumerissues/rightsresponsibilities/sewers/prs_web_sewertransfer
Mapping information is supplied by a specialist provider so that the company can pinpoint the exact locations of properties, plants, and other crucial features of the landscape.
In this particular client’s case, because of the harsh environments employees may be working in, a ruggedized tablet is used with protective casing so that water and dust ingress is prevented, and impacts are minimised.
Jobs are created using the client’s secure web portal and sent to each individual’s device so they know exactly which jobs belong to them. Alternatively an entirely new job can be started from the options on the device.
All data collected on the device is then sent to a secure web portal where the information can be viewed as a branded report. It can be printed out or emailed to a customer as a pdf file if required.
TAAP’s tablet-based applications enable greater visibility of mapped environments, and larger forms and image displays, and as they are developed using Microsoft Silverlight, means they will aid migration to tablet devices which use the forthcoming Windows 8 operating system.
TAAP is a leading provider of software solutions which allow organisations to mobilise their operations using hand held computers.
